Job Description:

SAIC-Frederick, Inc., is a wholly owned subsidiary of Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC).  As prime contractor for the National Cancer Institute’s research and development center in Frederick, MD, this national laboratory is dedicated to rapidly translating basic research into new technologies for diagnosing, treating, and preventing cancer and AIDS.  SAIC-Frederick maintains a full suite of advanced technologies in areas such as nanotechnology, genomics and imaging; operates the federal government’s only drug and vaccine manufacturing facilities; operates the high-performance Advanced Biomedical Computing Center; and supports more than 300 clinical trials for patients in the US and around the world. 

THIS POSITION IS AN AMERICAN RECOVERY AND REINVESTMENT ACT (ARRA) FUNDED POSITION. The Clinical Research Directorate (CRD) is responsible for providing high level research in support to the NCI-Frederick's Cancer Diagnostic Program (CDP) for the development of a laboratory-based Patient Characterization Center (PCC) / Molecular Clinical Assay Development Center (MCADC). This center is a new initiative designated for maturation of clinical assays suitable for medical and diagnostic applications for the Division of Cancer Treatment and Diagnosis (DCTD) sponsored national, extramural, clinical research related trials. This position will directly support those efforts. Work is performed independently under the general guidance of the lead Principal Investigator (PI). Responsibilities include performing research utilizing sound judgment analysis for development of new assays or production methods as well as developing or modifying techniques for solving problems. Responsible for performing data triage and quality control evaluations, preparing research plans, proposals, or new production methodologies. Assists with formal reporting of research data, including presentations and/or scientific publications. Researches and utilizes the most recent literature and scientific presentations for high level analysis. Responsibilities include maintaining quality and essential laboratory supplies and equipment for optimum usage. If work involves the use of potentially hazardous chemicals, biological or radiological materials or may be located in areas where such materials are used, the use of personal protective equipment and strict adherence to safety protocols will be required. This position is located in Rockville, Maryland. A temporary location will be in Frederick, MD.

REQUIRED SKILLS: Possession of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college/university in a field related to biomedical research or four (4) years equivalent experience in the appropriate field in lieu of degree. Foreign educated candidates who have completed part or all of their education outside of the United States must have their foreign education evaluated by an SAIC-approved accrediting organization to assure that it has met the equivalency of the qualifications of degree work in the United States. In addition to educational requirements, a minimum of five (5) years related biomedical experience. Ability to function independently and as a team in a specialized research laboratory using originality and sound judgment to perform tasks. Ability to independently evaluate the suitability and quality control of research or production assays or tests. Possess knowledge of basic subject matter of specialty (i.e., molecular biology, biochemistry, immunology, cell biology, etc.); advanced data reporting techniques, mathematics and statistics. Must possess basic laboratory techniques germane to the specialty area (i.e. molecular biology assays including good PCR technique, clinical sample handling, instrument operation, etc). Experience with assay development, validation and trouble shooting are all required. Candidates should be excellent team players and driven to achieve success. This position is subject to obtaining a Public Trust Clearance.

DESIRED SKILLS: Solid knowledge of oncology and related biomarkers is desired. Clinical testing experience and a proven track record of publications are of additional benefit. Strong technical skills are preferred. Familiarity with nucleic acid based assay technology (e.g. PCR, RT-PCR, sequencing, nucleic acid purification), clinical assays and other protoco-driven clinical research a plus.
