The American Association for Cancer Research (AACR), with more than 37,000 members residing in 108 countries, is the first and largest organization in the world dedicated to advances in all areas of high-quality, innovative cancer research.Its mission is to prevent and cure all cancers.The programs and activities of the AACR foster the exchange of new knowledge among scientists and physicians in the cancer field as well as in related biomedical sciences.AACR publishes eight peer-reviewed scientific journals and an award-winning magazine for cancer patients and their loved ones; convenes topical scientific conferences and an annual meeting that draws more than 19,400 participants; offers educational workshops that train young investigators in a variety of scientific and clinical areas; funds fellowships, career development awards, and research grants for both senior and junior investigators; raises public awareness of the progress in and reasons for hope in the biology, detection, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of cancer; engages actively in advocacy for increased federal research funding and other national policies that accelerate progress against cancer; and interacts with regulatory agencies to support regulatory science and policy.
Position Summary:
Working under the leadership of the Director, Philanthropic Communications, the Manager of Philanthropic Communications will support the Foundation’s communications initiatives to further the AACR’s mission. The Manager will assist the Director in creating content and providing editing as needed for materials to support multiple campaigns within the Foundation. Additionally, the Manager works in partnership with the AACR’s communications, public relations and marketing colleagues to develop and review content for public-facing campaigns and ensure deliverables are on schedule for all Foundation materials.
Major Duties and Responsibilities:
- Regularly partners with AACR Foundation team members including corporate, events and development staff to support their communication needs for fundraising programs.
- Assists Director in maintaining comprehensive communications calendar that aligns all messaging through multiple campaigns through a variety of media channels.
- Manages and maintains the Foundation’s communications resources, including electronic files, templates, and related content to provide comprehensive and strategic communications support across the team.
- Services as liaison with Creative Services to manage requests for graphics.
- Reviews Foundation website content in conjunction with AACR communications team and ensures Foundation content is promoted across AACR websites.
- Works with AACR public relations in the creation and timing of press releases celebrating inspirational gifts to the AACR Foundation and event announcements.
- Proactively researches and recommends content and strategies to support and advance AACR Foundation goals and awareness.
- Performs other duties as assigned by the Director, Philanthropic Communications.
Education and Training:
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Advanced degree preferred.
- Degree in related area of study preferred, such as communications, writing or journalism.
Essential Knowledge and Skills:
- Minimum of five (5) years relevant professional work experience in a communications setting, writing and editing content for multimedia use.
- Highly creative thinking and ability to develop content for all media.
- Exceptional project and time management skills and follow through.
- Takes initiative and demonstrates ownership of projects.
- Detail-oriented and ability to prioritize and multitask.
- Ability to interact proactively and collaboratively with colleagues at all levels.
Technical Competencies & Special Skills:
- Solid technical background.
- Exceptional verbal, written and proofing skills.
- Experienced in social media technologies and online social marketing.
- Proficiency in website analytics.
- Willingness to learn, accepts feedback and embraces continuous improvement.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite and creative software applications.
- Experienced in nonprofit communications and writing in context of science or health-related organization highly desirable.
